I’m pretty sure the train poster I saw for this project didn’t specify a romanization of Maakusu: za tawaa. Highlight of my morning commute.

    Talk about inside joke…

    There’s a famous book called 「マークスの山」 but I think that’s “Marks” apparently.

  2. W. David MARX Says:

Oh wait, if you are talking about Karl Marx, he is マルクス in Japanese. If you say マークス to a Japanese person, Communism will never cross into their minds.

    Damn you, rhoticity!

  4. DB Says:

This is totally unrelated, but have you guys seen how that new Kirin happoshu ‘Smooth’ is スムース in japanese? For some reason that drives me insane. Smoosu.

  5. Matt Says:

Yeah, I guess both forms are allowed (like “nyuusu”/”nyuuzu” for “news”)… so they had to have some reason to come down on the side they chose. Like focus groups finding unvoiced ス “smoother”, or some pre-existing trademark on drinks called スムーズ.
